A Winning Season: Acknowledging Those Who Make Great Communities Happen

I am feeling pretty good about planning in the Sacramento Valley Region. How I can feel so positively given the obvious challenges the profession faces these days? A few weeks ago, I was on the Sacramento Valley Section (SVS-APACA) Awards Committee and I saw firsthand the exemplary planning that is being done in our region, in spite of, or maybe because of, limited resources. The annual awards program is one of the activities in which all APA chapters in the country participate. The goal, of course, is to recognize excellence and outstanding leadership in planning. In California, a project, plan or person must win at one of the California Chapter’s eight sections in order to be eligible to compete for a state award. The SVS-APACA works with all of its section winners to make them competitive at the state level. This year we had several amazing section winners. We wish them luck at the state level. They are all examples of excellent planning.

The SVS-APACA Board feels that the national/state award criteria, which are developed nationally, do not reflect the innovation and creativity of Sacramento region. One thing you learn living in California is one size does NOT fit all!

The APA’s tag line is “Making Great Communities Happen” and that takes a lot more than a good plan. It takes heart and soul. It takes local heroes who are willing to take leadership roles. This is why the SVS-APACA Board established the Local Vision Awards. In the past we have recognized communities that have engaged their residents in meaningful dialogue and pushed them to dream big about the future. We have applauded schools that have used the planning and design process to make learning more meaningful to students. We have thanked individuals who have made sure that all the voices of the community were heard. And we have celebrated the creativity that committed organizations have shown in working to improve the quality of life in our region. It is all these efforts in concert that make a community a desirable and dynamic place to live. We are still taking nominations for this year’s Local Vision Awards. See our website for the nomination form.

The SVS-APACA has a new award , the LEGAGY AWARD hat we gave out last year for the first time. It recognizes one individual a year who is a role model for what we at the Sacramento Valley Section believe planners should strive to be. This person excels at their profession. A LEGAGY Planner is a mentor to young planners, and actively involved in the APA to improve not just the quality of the profession, but also the respect for the profession. And finally a LEGAGY Planner uses their planning skills to give back to their community. Our first LEGAGY Planner is Michael Notestine. Every year the section will give a student scholarship in the name of that year’s LEGAGY Planner. For information on how to donate to our LEGAGY Scholarship or to nominate someone for a LEGACY Award, contact Leslie Walker.

We will look forward to seeing you at our January 2011 Awards Ceremony. You can read about these year’s awards under the Events Tab. I hope you will consider applying for an award in 2012. Look for a April 2012 deadline.

Director's Corner Feb. 2011

Hello All! Well it is another year and the Sacramento Valley Section has started it right by recognizing great planning and planners at our 2010 award on January 12th. I want to thank Leslie Walker for pulling off a fabulous event within our limited budget. Great job Leslie!

AECOM let the section use its terrific conference/employee lounge space. (Thank you to Janet Dallas for all her help in making sure we had everything we needed.) In all, seven awards were given, the APA awards, the Sacramento Valley Section Local Vision Awards and our section’s new Legacy Award. (You can link to the program here.) The Legacy Award, as envisioned by the section board, recognizes experienced planners that have made extraordinary contributions to their communities, to the profession of planning in general, and to the Sacramento Valley APA Section. Our first Legacy Award was given to Mike Notestine. The board was unanimous in its belief that Mike embodies the intent of the Legacy Award. Over the past three decades Mike has spent more than half as a City of Sacramento planning commissioner. Throughout his career, and currently as a partner at Mogavero Notestine Associates (MNA), Mike has helped guide numerous communities in their quest to be better places. He has also given generously of his time and expertise to the Sacramento Valley APA section, as well as the state board.

In the name of full disclosure, I need to tell you all that my husband works with Mike at MNA. That is not entirely accurate. When we moved to Sacramento almost 15 years ago, my husband starting working at MNA and they have been part of our family in Sacramento ever since and Mike has been a friend and mentor to us both. To be honest that is what I like about the Sacramento Valley Section APA. We try hard to provide services to our members but I hope we provide something more intangible especially during this challenging time for planners. I hope that we are providing a home for planners and non-planners who are working to improve the quality of life in the Sacramento Region. I hope that we do more than provide professional education, CM credits, and an awards program. I hope that we can support and inspire you all to create your own powerful Legacy.

Director's Corner March 2010

Hello Sacramento Valley Section!

We had a great year last year. Of course the highlight of the year was the California APA Conference in Tahoe that was planned and hosted by our section. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best ever. Congratulations to co-chairs Rick Rust and Tricia Stevens and their team on an excellent job. I continue to be impressed by the folks who are involved in our section. Their commitment to the profession of planning is inspiring. And lets face it, being a planner is a little tough right now. I see that in our decreasing membership numbers every quarter here in the Sacramento Valley Section. It is a perfectly reasonable question to ask “Why should I pay my membership dues. What is in it for me.” As Section Director it has been my primary goal to make your APA membership valuable to you. And yes, I do take it a little personally that you all have not renewed! But let me tell you why you should stay a member or become a member even if it is only a State membership--which is, by the way, quite a bit cheaper.

Sacramento Valley Section won a state award in 2009 for the high quality programs we offer our planners and the community. Our section by far provides more low cost opportunities for CM credits than any other section and the state. Heck we even gave some credits away for free when we webcast Andres Duany’s very engaging presentation a few months ago.

The section helped start a Young Planners Group (YPG). Not only did we bring some new life into our section, but we created a national model for how to engage young planning professionals. Especially in this economic climate, we need to encourage people who are just starting their careers to stay in planning.

We reformed the UC Davis Student APA Group and created a new model for how to support them.

Sac Valley APA continued to build partnerships with AIA, ASLA, AEP, US Green Building Council, ECOS and ULI to do outreach and eduction to our memberships and the broader community around the issues that we all care about like building better, more livable, healthier and more economically competitive communities.

We have done a tremendous amount in the last couple of years with very little other than our members continued support. I hope that you all will continue to be members if only of the California Chapter. Together we help the Sacramento Region understand how important planning is to our future.
