Past Programs and Events

Policy in Motion: Transportation Planning in California after AB 32

On Thursday, December 1, 2011, YPG together with ASLA's Emerging Professional's Group, co-hosted an informative event with over 15 young professionals in attendance that explored how recent conversations around transportation policy has transformed. Lauren Michele, a young professional herself, principal, and owner of Policy in Motion was the guest speaker.  Ms. Michele collaborates with government agencies and varied stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels to craft and implement transportation plans and regulatory frameworks that work toward community sustainability and people-oriented development. She recently published a book entitled, 'Policy in Motion: Transportation Planning in California after AB 32' that examines California's planning initiatives post-AB 32 and in light of SB 375.  Ms. Michele's presentation explored the policy, politics, and changes to state law that are helping to achieve sustainable communities and transportation systems.  Photo album and highlights available at the Policy in Motion Facebook page.

September Happy Hour: PLAN to be there!

On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, YPG hosted an end-of-the-summer mixer at LEVEL UP in midtown Sacramento, where young planners reconnected and learned more about the new PLAN Sac Valley mentoring program.

YPG Summer Mixer

On Tuesday, June 28, 2011, Sacramento's YPG and other Section members braved a Summer rain storm for some summer fun and networking on Kupros Bistro.  The Kupros building was originally constructed in 1910 before being transformed into a costume shop and now a one-of-a kind Craftsman architectural style bistro environment with beautiful stain glass interiors.

Mixer and Lunchtime Forum with the California Planning Roundtable (CPR)

On Thursday, May 13, 2011, the APA Sac Valley Section YPG had the opportunity to meet and mingle with CPR members and the SVS Board, along with Ken Alex (Director of the Office of Planning & Research) and Cliff Rechtschaffen (Special Advisor to the Governor working on environmental, energy, and climate change issues at the Attorney General's Office) at the Citizen Hotel’s Scandal Bar. Then, on Friday, May 13 the APA Sac Valley Section YPG was invited to the CPR members meeting for a lunchtime discussion regarding partnering opportunities and activities with YPG, including the potential for collaborative involvement with CPR's ‘Reinventing the General Plan Project’ and other mentoring opportunities.

A Walking Tour and Panel Discussion "Revitalization of the River District" Street Walking Tour

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011, the APA Sac Valley Section YPG joined other planning and emerging young professional groups for a panel discussion and walking tours featuring the owners, planners, designers, and builders of the landmark projects in the River District.

K Street Walking Tour

On Wednesday, March 30, 2011, the APA Sac Valley Section YPG and the Emerging Professional's Group of the American Society of Landscape Architects Sierra Chapter (ASLA EPG) toured K Street and learned about who the City selected to develop the 700 and 800 blocks and what types of uses are planned within the projects. Following the tour, participants networked at the new "mermaid" Dive Bar.  Special thanks to tour guides Denise Malvetti and Beth Tincher from the Sacramento Economic Development Department.

League of California Cities Headquarters Tour

On Tuesday, February 22, 2011, the YPG was given a tour of the League of California Cities headquarters that highlighted recent renovations to their building to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Gold Standard for "new construction."  While guiding the tour, John McElligott, the League's Technology & Facilities Director, highlited the buildings many sustainable features and explained the building's sustainable site characteristics, efficiency of water use, aspects of energy conservation, recycled materials, reuse of resources, and improvements to indoor environmental quality. After the tour, the YPG networked at Spartaro Restaurant, located within walking distance from the League's headquarters.

ULI Sacramento YLG Presents and Hosts APA YPG 2011 Professional Development Series

On  January 26, 2011, ULI Sacramento YLG hosted the YPG for a professional development series.  "Make yourself indispensable"—as the current national recession continues, and more of our positions, as well as those of our friends and colleagues, are in jeopardy of disappearing, those words have never been more important. The ULI Young Leaders Group presented the 2011 Professional Development topic: Personal Branding: Your Professional Value. Companies have been branding themselves for decades to make their sales easier, because of the expectation based on that brand: it is time you do the same. Josh Pane, President of Pane and Pane Associates, Inc., Elizabeth Brinton, Chief Business and Public Affairs Officer for SMUD, and Scott Syphax, President and CEO of Nehemiah Corporation of America, shared their experiences and value derived from understanding how a personal brand will lead to professional success. At this event, participants were given the opportunity to figure out individual strengths, identify which ones are most valuable, and walk away with the direction to develop and implement a personal branding strategy.

Rural-Urban Connections Strategy (RUCS) Presentation

On May 6, 2009, in conjunction with the regularly scheduled Sacramento Valley Section APA CA Young Planners Group Subcommittee meeting, a special presentation was given by David Shabazian on the Rural-Urban Connection Strategy (RUCS). The SACOG RUCS project is a look at the region's growth and sustainability objectives from a rural perspective. In the same way that Blueprint is an economic development strategy for urban areas, the RUCS project will be an economic and environmental sustainability strategy for rural areas.

Globe Mills Site Tour

On April 29, 2009 the Sacramento Valley Section APA CA Young Planners Group (YPG) in partnership with the ULI Sacramento Young Leaders Group (YLG) held a program and site tour of the historic Globe Mills project.  The program and site tour showcased the public-private partnerships and innovative reuse of the historic Globe Mills site located in the hisotric Alkali Flat neighborhood adjacent to downtown Sacramento.  The event included an onsite presentation and panel discussion and a site tour of the redeveloped mill.  The program focused on the use of public-private partnerships to overcome obstacles to the financing, adaptive reuse, design, and redevelopment of infill sites.  The site tour focused on the innovative design and unique architectural elements that were employed to convert the existing, dilapidated mill into a mixed-use development.

Climate Change 101

On July 21, 2009, the Young Planners Group (YPG) hosted a program that provided a brief explanation and overview of climate change issues as they pertain to the planning, development, and environmental fields. The audience was given the opportunity to ask questions for the panelists to address during the presentation. The Climate Change 101 program included five main components:
  • Understanding the basic science of global warming and climate change;
  • Identifying climate change impacts (e.g., coastline erosion, flooding, water supply, infrastructure issues) and adaptation strategies;
  • Understanding climate change legislation;
  • Addressing climate change in planning; and
  • Finding more information to help you address this emerging issue.
